My Favorite Christmas Decorating Hacks
It all begins with an idea.
If you’re anything like me, when you wake up on November 1st, you brew your morning cup of coffee into your favorite Christmas mug, start the fireplace, and pull out your Christmas storage bins. But, let’s be honest, decorating for every season can be overwhelming and with influencer culture booming, the urge to buy new Christmas decor every year is tempting and expensive. Here are a few hacks that help me decorate my home with ease and achieve the coziest, romantic Christmas vibe every year.
Choose a theme. I encourage you to choose a basic theme for each level of your home that you think you will like for years to come. This allows you to collect pieces over the years that have meaning to you, while providing a guiding design principal for cohesion. For example, my main floor is classic Christmas - think red and green with all the kids’ hand made ornaments. Our basement on the other hand, is all things whimsical, Candy Land, with candy cane picks, gumdrop ornaments, and cupcake tree toppers. By choosing a theme for each level of my home, it feels cohesive, while still allowing me to play with different ideas.
Pick something to collect. Christmas is about family, tradition and memories. I encourage you to pick something to collect over the years. For me, I collect glass Christmas trees and every year I display them on our bookcase in our living room. You on the other hand could pick snowmen, Santas, nutcrackers, or anything else that lights you up. Collecting pieces over the years creates a space that feels intentional and meaningful.
Layer. When it comes to styling, we want to avoid clutter but Christmas is the perfect time to play with a bit more of a maximalist approach. Think about layering different garlands on your mantel, different heights of decorative objects on your shelves, or picks, ribbon, and ornaments on your tree.
Lighting. Lighting is everything during the holiday season. I mean, is there anything better than turning off the overhead lights and enjoying your evening with mood lighting from the fireplace and Christmas tree? I challenge you to turn off the ceiling lights and utilize all the lamps, trees, fireplaces and candles. One of my favorite products this year are battery operated, remote controlled taper candles and tea lights. Feel free to message me for links to my Amazon favorites!
